Designed by Primo Orpilla and Verda Alexander, founders and co-principals of studio o+a in San Francisco, the edge promotes the modern workstyle by creating a new way for people to move out of a workstation, collaborate and simply hang out. Based on a ‘found objects’ principle, the variety of materials, forms and sizes enables the edge to address a broad range of work typologies: from heads down focused work with a laptop or tablet, to small lounge discussions, to dedicated meeting spaces under the overhead canopy. Introduced in a variety of materials, the edge is intentionally built on unique modules. When pushed together, these modules create a patchwork landscape across the workspace. The use of simple materials such as plywood and felt, and the concept of stacked crates and urban textures lend to its authentic approach to creating a space that is more flexible than walls or ceilings. - See more at: http://www.firstoffice.com/products/tables/the_edge#sthash.hrAYiVmi.dpuf
9 to 5 Seating Hawthorne Facility LEED Gold Certified
HAWTHORNE, CA, June 2013— The 9 to 5 Seating facility in Hawthorne, California, has
been awarded the prestigious LEED® Gold for green buildings. This 100,000 square foot building
houses the company’s corporate offices, product showroom, manufacturing plant and warehouse.
The LEED rating system, developed by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC), is the
foremost program for buildings, homes and communities that are designed, constructed,
maintained and operated for improved environmental and human health performance.
“Even before the first sketches for this facility were drawn, we had made the decision for an
exemplary building with cutting edge technology for sustainable operation,” said Dara Mir,
president, 9 to 5 Seating. “Being in a LEED Gold certified facility shows our environmental
commitment in practice.” Design services were provided by Ware Malcomb’s Irvine, Calfornia,
9 to 5 Seating achieved LEED certification for implementing practical and measurable
strategies and solutions aimed at achieving high performance in: sustainable site development,
water savings, energy efficiency, materials selection and indoor environmental quality.
“Buildings are a prime example of how human systems integrate with natural systems,” said
Rick Fedrizzi, President, CEO and Founding Chair, USGBC. “The 9 to 5 Seating project efficiently
uses our natural resources and makes an immediate, positive impact on our planet, which will
tremendously benefit future generations.”
Among the sustainable technologies at work in the 9 to 5 Seating Hawthorne facility are
rooftop-mounted photovoltaic cells. Since they began generating electricity in July of 2011, these
cells have generated more electricity than the building has used. Specifically, they have:
- generated electricity required to light 2,032 60-watt bulbs for 1 year of 8 hours daily usage
- offset carbon dioxide equal to 6,408 trees
- prevented the emissions equivalent of 255 tons of carbon dioxide
- created energy savings equal to 28,839 gallons of gasoline
